My Journey To Nutrition Coaching

Many of us know that what we eat plays a significant part in our health. However, food can be a complex issue because people have different nutritional needs. I didn’t learn about nutrition until I reached my 30’s. 

As a kid, my diet included bagel bites, taquitos, and peanut butter sandwiches. The only vegetable I would eat was a potato. As I continued into my teenage years and had unfettered access to the glorious snack bar at school, I would eat candy and chips for lunch. Once I started working and making my own money, I had the freedom to eat all the fast food I wanted. 

I was a high school athlete, so I could eat whatever I wanted without gaining weight. Our coaches explained nutrition, but I didn’t understand what they meant. Those food habits continued until early adulthood. Then, in my late 20’s, I had a health scare and needed to clean up my eating habits and lose weight. The next logical step for me was to diet. 

Dieting was so stressful! I felt completely out of balance, and it took a toll on my mental health. My worth as a person was directly related to how much I weighed. When I couldn’t stick to a diet, I was a failure.

Don’t Give Up, There is Hope

I am here to tell you that there is HOPE and not to despair. The hope comes in the form of holistic nutrition coaching!

When dealing with your health, it is crucial to learn how to be your advocate. I knew in my soul that there is not a one size fit all approach to nutrition. Food that could be good for one person could potentially be deadly for another person. This concept is called bio-individuality. 

In my nutrition coaching, I honor my client’s bio-individuality. I help my clients embrace what makes them different. They learn how to listen to their bodies to see what foods leave them feeling energized, satisfied, and free from discomfort. 

However, my style of nutrition coaching goes beyond what is on your plate. There are areas of your life, such as career, relationships, physical activity, spirituality, that can significantly impact your health. I call these areas primary food because when you nourish yourself in these areas, the food on your plate becomes secondary.
